Write-UP: Proud to Be Tejano

I don’t normally exert my pride as a fan/musician of Tejano, Conjunto, and Norteno music.  But the recent events which took place in Mexico involving (prepare yourself for this word) Duranguense vocalist Sergio Gomez (K-Paz de la Sierra) force me to show it.

It is my understanding that many of these D bands, along with bandas,  are backed by huge teletubbies drug mobs.  HUGE.  This means that these people put their money up for these “bands” to be successful.  If you don’t know already, in this onda, you need to shell out money to get anywhere.  So, its safe to say that these folx are investors.  Investors that you can’t mess with.  To top things off, this is all taking place in Mexico.  With all due respect, the legal system and police system is not as effective as our trusty American system (is that or joke or not?).

In Tejano music, we have private investors.  But you know what?  If we screw up, at least we can keep our lives.  That’s not to say, however, that K-Paz de la Sierra pissed off their investors.  Story is that they were told not to play somewhere (perhaps their “investors” had problems with the “investors” in Michoacan?).  At least if we don’t like what our investors present to us, we can voice it and not have someone shoot us in the face.  I’m proud to be a Tejano.  I’m proud to have this music, which isn’t funny to listen to, flowing through my mind, body, and soul.  Perhaps some of us should take some time to reflect on that, to appreciate the grand music we have, the rich Tejano culture, and as musicians, you should be proud to be a part of this, and not the “D” word scene (which is called Duranguense even though the poor fad started in Chicago; WTF?).  Should Mexico still be considered as a travel spot for bands, given the current circumstances?

Note:  When using the term “Tejano,” as a noun, it should be understood we mean a fan or musician of the Tejano, Conjunto, and Norteno genres of our music.

Also, we are not as insensitive as you may perceive us to be.  We are very sorry that this unfortunate event took place.   Not mentioned in this Write-UP was Zayda Pena, who a week earlier, had also been assaulted.  She was later murdered at the hospital she was taken to; the men responsible for her death followed the ambulance that transported her to the hospital.  Our condolences, prayers, and thoughts go out to the Pena and Gomez family.

  1. amen!

  2. i heard about that shit. CRAZY. i also think that most of us as tejanos dont do it for the fame or money. its more for the pure enjoyment of enduring our razas struggless and keeping our heritage alive. “las canciones del bprracho, quisas nos hagan rellir, pero al fondo son las penas de el hombre y de su sufrir”
    one of my favorite lines.

  3. Captain my Captain!

  4. lol ^ that was stupid. made me laugh though.
