Write-UP — Getting tired of that sound…need something fresh

penta_gif.gif
Everyday when I get home from work, I immediately go to my desk, grab my bajo-sexto, and try to create nonsense. Afterwards, I’ll switch and pick up one of my accordions, but lately I’ve found it harder and harder to do
(to pick up my accordions, that is). Its not harder in the sense that I’m limited to what I can play due to my skill level (been playing for ten years now). To me, its hard because of the cemented traditional (as well as current trend) song about love. Take a look at the song titles on your latest CD from Solido, Siggno, Intocable. Am I biased towards new “fresh” groups? No. Look at any veteran band, 99.999999% of songs are love songs (okay that was an overexaggeration). I am using the new groups, however, to help you identify what it is I’m pointing out.

How long will supporters of tejano music be okay with this? True, there’s music about drinking…But to me, when I turn on the radio, all I hear is this:
1. I love you, you love me, we’re on happy family…..and
2. 99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer….
Don’t bash me for that, take the example and try to see where I am going.

At the moment, I have written 4 songs. Only one of them is on the subject of love. The others, I won’t give any details on (I’ve not even showed them to my fellow members of the band), but its safe to say that they have nothing to do with el amor. The style, rhythm, instrumental arrangements, and vocal is completely off of what would even consider to be tejano. Because of the way I am, it doesn’t bother me that the majority of listeners probably wouldn’t like it (not at first, at least) or would be utterly shocked by what they heard (and saw…). Its not a cry for attention either, but rather a shout out to those who feel the same, those who think the same or have just a small itch. Its not an attempt to try to create a new genre either…just something different from what your used to.

I hope I was able to share or refresh and “idea” for some. If you find my story the least bit of interesting, you’re welcome to discuss it below, or send me a message on my myspace page here. I would love to see and/or hear what you’re working on, or what you have to say. “Write-Ups” will be posted every Monday of the week…
