How to Be a Good Musician’s Wife / Girlfriend

This has somewhat a relation to the David Hernandez/Palomo article from not too long ago. After I posted the result of that story, I had to ask: Why? Why is David out? WTF Happened?

Of course, I asked with all due formality and received the following response: “no nosotros no teniamos ningun problema con el su novia le pido que dejara el grupo y asi lo hizo.”

This is a good time for any girlfriends and wives to read this and get a few pointers on how not to be hated by other musician’s and how to not make your husband/boyfriend miserable.

1. First of all, and most importantly, be supportive of what he does. That talent did not just hit him one day, and he’s not in that group because he won a game of poker. He’s in that group because he displayed a comprehension of music and skills. It takes a lot of work to produce what we do.

2. Don’t get jealous when he gets off stage to take pictures with chicks. We get that all the time, and we’re not trying to grab their asses (note: this only applies to those of us that are taken! LOLz OMG). Its just a picture. You should be happy we don’t high tail it and leave with them and end up at home with you.

3. Don’t show up to every gig just to make sure we’re not cheating on you and don’t scare away other chicks. Come on, those are our fans. You are crushing our fan base, without them, how are we supposed to get anywhere?

4. Sometimes, we practice a lot. Don’t get mad when we’re not home every night. Do you want us to sound like crap or what? Want your friends to say “OMG LOLZ listen to those fools they are teh suckage!!!11!1!1!” No. That would embarrass you.

5. Attitude says a lot. If we’re known, don’t be all snotty and stuck up around people. Help us, socialize with people. Maybe even, don’t tell them who you are but ask them questions about us so that we can fix what we need to better entertain our fans.

6. When we’re gone touring, don’t mess around with other guys. We’ll find out. And when we do, we will write about it, and throw it in your face everyday.

7. When we feel homesick, encourage us, make us feel like we’re doing great, and remind us that we’ll be home soon.

8. Tell us all about the gossip you hear.

9. Don’t believe everything you hear.

10. Here’s the biggest one: DON’T EVER MAKE US QUIT THE BAND. That is the most pathetic thing you can do. It is so low, I would compare it to having an abortion. Music is a very special force within a musician. Taking that away from him is like taking his heart and soul out of him and ripping it to shreds. How would you like it if we did that to you? Took something so dear to you? You have no idea how miserable that can make a musician feel. Its like taking your child away from you.

I know how miserable that feeling can be, because I quit my band one time. Then I had to go back. And I have someone very close to me who’s wife has made him leave music for the wrong reason. His soul is burning inside, he wants to play, and one day he will. Every time I visit with him, I try to jam out with him for a little while just so he can bring out those feelings. But when we stop playing, I can see the disappointment and anger in his face.

Be a good wife, and support us. It is true that there are musicians out there who mess around even though they’re married. For the most part, most of us that are taken respect what we have. Don’t always believe that we’re all the same.
