Round of Applause for Jay Perez

Up until now, I have never been a fan of Jay Perez. Señorita Tequila (not to be confused with Tila Tequila LOL) didn’t do it for me, I felt that Cumbia Con Salsa (remake) was weak, and well, other singles from the past. None of them could convince me that going to see him live would be an option for me. How come I didn’t like his music? That was not the problem.

The music was always there. I mean, conjunto is my alley, but I don’t mind listening to Tejano or norteño every now and then. Arrangements always nice, great mix…….What bothered me was the vocal work. I never liked Jay Perez’s voice. The songs would pop up on my radio and I would change it. To me, it always seemed that his voice seemed too (what’s the word I’m looking for?) glotty. Almost as though his throat were closed while he was singing. However, on his recent single, “Vivir Por Ti,” I must say that he did an outstanding job. That song has made a believer out of me. His voice sounds real toned and seasoned. As a matter of fact, I will go on to say that “Vivir Por Ti” should be what every Tejano song should sound like. Not so much in terms of note-per-note, but rather, the formula. Everything is balanced, the vocals are super awesome, but not over-emphasized.

If you haven’t bought Jay’s new CD with “Vivir Por Ti,” you should. He’s come a long way, and the end result is a winner in our book.
