Univision Closing its doors?
When we say Univision, we mean the record label part of the Mexican media conglomerate.
We were (and still are) very skeptical when we heard about this one. Everyone (really?) is talking about how Univision will soon be closing its doors. Keep in mind, there aren’t many major Tejano/Regional Mexican labels around.
There seems to be some kind of domino effect in play, however. Apparently, there are some other “key” Tejano/Regional Mexican labels that will be shutting down as well. But who?
We have to ask, with many big bands like Intocable and Duelo (not to mention the many international heavy hitters on their list), why would they shut down? Only time will tell.
Do keep in mind that this is an unconfirmed rumor for now.

thats new to me. i think in some cases INDEPENDANT is the way to go if you really want to prove yourself. but i really hope the mainstream tejano heavy hitters dont close.

The rumor is true.
Univision got bought out by Universal for those of you who dont know.
Universal is transitioning its office as we speak and will be dropping the Univision name.
Good luck to all you Univision bands….but then again most of all the bands have been dropped.
Ive been predicting these events 5 years ago.
There is no more money in CDs…the future has arrived…invest in yourselves cuz no one else is gonna do it.
Musicians have always made their money live….and that will never change…I beleive the cd has about 5 years of life left….maybe even less.
And for those of you barely waking up…radio is headed the same way. Radio is no longer effective…only the dinosaurs are listening. Dinosaurs being people in their 30’s or older….by the way this demograhic doesnt buy much cds and doesnt go to many concerts…I know of several bands that are receiving a ton of airplay but playing to dead crowds…and in some cases not even gigging.
The music biz is a youth oriented biz….always has been always will be.
So how do you combat all this????

how wierd, i never thought about it like that. if cds are being phased out, do you think the price of mp3’s will eventually go up theoreticly???? or perhaps bands raising their gig prices???

Izzy…I honestly believe music will be going the free route in the next 5 years…..what I mean is music will be downloaded for free…sort of like how radio is free to us…you will see bands get smarter and give away their music…the rise of the independent labels…
so how do you make money?
I know of a band based out of Houston…they have no record deal,so bigtime booking agency, and no airplay…in fact they sound horrible vocaly….bandwise they are good…these guys have gone to the Rio Grande Valley on 3 seperate occasions and packed it in (3000 people) at $10 a head.
Do the math.
So how did they do it???????????

aaaaahhhh, i feel a little more enlightend. ADAPTATION. free sounds good to me. but i also predict better quality shows and musicianship for your cover charge…….thats a good thing
